Fortress

A fortress built on sand
offers a lovely ocean view.
And inside its thick walls
is a place to hide,
declare peace,
proclaim detente.

This refuge offers safety
from sea monsters and sirens,
from great green tempests,
and pirates hungry for treasure.

Hide everything.
Bury it deep.
Defend this rickety castle,
molding bricks
and all.

Let stone and mortar serve
in place of a courageous heart.

Let the ocean cry your tears.

But remember:

A fortress built on sand
cannot last.
And walls might keep your heart safe
but they will not make it
free.

This is a Sunday Scribblings post.

The foolish man built his house upon the sand..as we sang in school..maybe internal walls are far harder to break than rocks..not as easy to sweep away as sand..a free heart (and soul) is truly gold..wise..golden words..Jae

This is a wonderful metaphor for so much in life. Safety is an illusion I think.

I love these lines: "Let stone and mortar serve
in place of a courageous heart." I think I prefer to work on a courageous heart ;-)

Intriguing. Perhaps we are all guilty of building sand fortesses.

Maybe it's better to have built the walls from sand. Gives them a time limit. ;)
