55 - San Marcial

It's not there any more. I don't know why they bother with a sign. For almost a hundred years the town has been gone, buried under silt without so much as a wall or fence post to mark the spot. There is just this sign. Don't bother looking for a town. It died years ago.

About Friday Flash 55: The challenge is to write a complete story in fifty-five words. If you've written a 55-flash, go let The G-Man know!

Floods and Fires will do that to a town! Is it a tourist location? strange the sign would still be there...

@Margaret: No, there's nothing for tourists to see. This isn't unusual in New Mexico, where I suspect they keep these place names active so their maps won't look so empty.

San Marcial was buried by back-to-back flooding of the Rio Grande in 1929. At the time, it was referred to as "New Mexico's Pompeii" because survivors had to dig through as much as six feet of silt to salvage their valuables. My grandmother's wood-burning cast iron stove was saved that way, dug up out of the mud.

Fascinating post. Over here in the UK we have 'deserted' villages from 500 or so years ago, due to plague or economic changes.

Wow, gone but not totally forgotten. I'm kind of glad they kept the sign.
