55 - The Quarry

First there were rocks and grasses, insects and small woodland creatures. Trees stretched toward the heavens, providing safe haven for passing birds. Then men came with machines and iron, ripping nature asunder for profit and glory. Soon business fancies changed, opportunities moved farther afield, and the men went away. Grass and trees came once again.

I'm reading Chesapeake by Jame Mitchner. In it, some of the first white settlers to that area burned off the old growth woods to make room for tobacco crops which depleted the soil. Then they moved on to other fields. 75 years later their descendants rediscovered the place, which had regenerated all but the oldest trees.

@Alice: Yes, we do this over and over, don't we? The pic is from Mt Ascutney in Vermont, where there are a lot of old ruins from a quarrying operation.

I like the 'circle' of things here, humans are just passing through really.

I love how mother nature takes back. It's rather encouraging.
